Investigating Water Filtration and Sustainability
Welcome! We hope you find everything you need here to have a great STEM Lesson! Please let us know if you have any questions.
STEMonDemand@usm.edu
This lesson is hands-on, interactive, and connects science to real-world issues, providing students with both practical knowledge and an understanding of sustainability. The inclusion of biofiltration and the role of grass and other plants ties the concept of water quality to environmental science in a meaningful way.
Approximate time needed: 60 minutes
Standards: 3-5-ETS1-2, 3-5-ETS1-3, MS-ESS3-3, MS-ETS1-3, MS-PS1-3, MS-ESS3-1
NGSS:
3-5-ETS1-2. Generate and compare multiple possible solutions to a problem based on how well each is likely to meet the criteria and constraints of the problem.
3-5-ETS1-3. Plan and carry out fair tests in which variables are controlled, and failure points are considered to identify aspects of a model or prototype that can be improved.
MS-ESS3-3: Apply scientific principles to design a method for monitoring and minimizing human impact on the environment.
MS-ETS1-3: Analyze data from tests to determine the best design solution to a problem.
MS-PS1-3: Gather and make sense of information to describe that matter is conserved in a chemical reaction.
MS-ESS3-1: Construct an argument supported by evidence for how increases in human population and per-capita consumption of natural resources impact Earth’s systems.
MDE CCRS:
Science Practices: Planning and carrying out investigations, analyzing data, constructing explanations, and designing solutions.
Sustainability: Understanding the human impact on the environment and how sustainable practices can protect water quality.
