G 8 - 10 Algebra I, Geometry

Welcome! We hope you find everything you need here to have a great STEM Lesson! Please let us know if you have any questions.

This lesson introduces students to the practical use of literal equations—formulas that include multiple variables—and teaches them how to apply their understanding of these equations to solve for their desired quantity in a given context. Rather than just solving for numbers, students learn how formulas function as tools in science, geometry, and everyday life.   The lesson culminates with students creating their own real-life scenario that revolves around a literal equation.

Approximate time needed:  60-minutes

Standards: MS-CCRS-A-CED.4, MS CCRS-N-Q.1

MS-CCRS-A-CED.4: Rearrange formulas to highlight a quantity of interest, using the same reasoning as in solving equations.

For example, rearrange Ohm’s law, V = IR, to highlight resistance, R.*

MS CCRS-N-Q.1: Use units as a way to understand problems and to guide the solution of multi-step problems; choose and interpret units consistently in formulas; choose and interpret the scale and the origin in graphs and data displays.
